I witnessed the aftermath of the 1989 outbreak
within an hour of the
My mom and I heard it on the radio just when I had to pick Ted up from
work in East Rutherford so I decided to re-route my trip in order see it
first hand.... and boy howdy, did I ever!
It had skipped down the hillside where the neighborhood kids sled down
in the Winter... hit the 20 foot wall of the Rt 21 overpass.. I figured
"WOW! Good thing that wall was there!"
I went under the overpass and took the bridge over the Passaic River
and was caught agog that it had jumped Rt 21 & the river and touched
down again in Riverside Park... DESTROYED several 100+ year old willow
trees I recall thinking, "As if they'd had a hand grenade planted in them!"
...then I saw what HAD BEEN
the new car dealership!
Seeing those emmense trees twisted and torn apart like bundles of straw
was like getting punched in the gut! I'll never forget it as long as I live!
** Rt 21 & the river divides Passaic & Bergen Counties.
