So I finally published an iWeb site...

School Appeals Counsel

... and would be really interested to know what you guys make of it and whether it can be improved in any way?

The type size is way too small. Also get rid of any black background with white type pages. Use black on white.

You still put "e" at the end of words where it shouldn't be. wink

What Reboot said.
Increase the width. You can make the type and graphics larger without losing the basic layout.
Limit the color pallet. Too many colors on each page, and each page is different. Consistency helps for navigation.

Thanks. I actually started out with larger pages and fonts then suddenly thought of contracting everything for smartphones. At that point I was running two pages for everything with the user choosing from the home page whether to go with large or small. Seems from what you guys are saying I need to go back to that although the larger version is about a week's work behind. Points noted though, many thanks.

So I brought back the larger pages and fonts which I'm hoping is going to be a reasonable compromise for all access devices? I'm gonna have to get to grips with iFrames I think with this kind of site. Observations much appreciated,

No offense as you've probably put a lot of work into it, but, you shouldn't be using iWeb. It is way too outdated to make a modern website that will carry into the future or be mobile friendly without adding code to the pages. The website is not up to modern standards and is getting older day by day.

If you want Google not to downgrade the search results you need to get the site mobile friendly.

What you should end up with is one site for large monitors, and another that it would redirect people to if they are on a mobile device.

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/

https://developers.google.com/webmasters/mobile-sites/mobile-seo/common-mistakes

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4921113?tstart=0

https://www.wix.com/ might be worth looking in to.

For now until you get it up to modern standards at the very least you should standardized the colors on each page, backgrounds, toolbars, etc, and please get rid of the black background pages if nothing else, terrible.

I'm guilty of the same, my site isn't mobile friendly, need to practice what I preach. smile

Okay thanks Reboot... iWeb is the only tool I have some idea how to use but I take your point. Originally I was only really aiming to advertise a service but one thing led to another and it became a bigger project than I originally anticipated. Thanks also for the links.

Listening to Reboot and Acumowchek I got an 'Awesome' on the Googlebot Mobile Friendly Test for my home page!

I've enlarged the fonts and simplified the site somewhat whilst also reducing the colour palette so hopefully there's more consistency now between the pages?

For some reason my son is getting both old and new sites on a google search when I thought iWeb publishing meant overwriting the previous version?

Way to go! Much more legible.

Yeah, iWeb is history, but it sure is a drop-dead simple app to use. I wish Apple didn't abandon it.

He needs to either reload the page, or clear the cache in his browser.

Looks a lot better. Did you always have the FaceTime window in Contact? Maybe it got lost in the black before.

Maybe just a couple of more points or so bigger on the smaller sized fonts though, for the phone.

I used to work in PageMaker and Quark quite a lot so when I looked at iWeb it made perfect sense... I don't suppose one can grab the iWeb code and move the site over to another Web creation tool for completion?

The FaceTime window was there before which is why I went for a black background on the page but actually its slightly fake in that there's no code behind it! I was either going to make it happen at some point which might not be possible or simply give the punters my FaceTime handle on request.

Oh, on the smaller fonts I tried re-designing those pages but got a bit bogged down so put it down for while as work in progress
