My client plugged a WIN-formatted Hitachi external into his new MacBook Air (OS10.11) and of course it wouldn't mount. But now it won't mount to his old laptop, either. Is there any way to force it to mount, or at least recover files from it? Seems like I have seen this solution somewhere once, but can't remember it--or do I need to go straight to a data recovery service? Oh yes, it's not visible in DiskUtility

Try this, http://www.stellarinfo.com pretty sure they have both Mac and Win limited Demo versions. I bought it along time ago so I can't remember. Works great.

If that can't see the drive though you have a hardware issue on the hard drive, cable, or the USB bridge on the drive.

Best case is the hard drive is good but the case or cable are bad.

Hello, I have the same problem but I need recover office files, I've used stellar software but it does not work fine. At this time I've migrated the files from Mac to windows 7 to have more options. So, is there another office recovery tool to recover lost files?
