Can I use Music Match as a sort of Back-Up for iTunes?

Important Bit -> Will my music still be available
(as long as I maintain my Apple Account) even if
The Computer Associated with the Account is gone?

I don't mind paying for the service, as long as my
music remains available for my devices especially
when I can still access it during parties and such
when friends & family have a WI-Fi connection.

Yes and yes.

Make sure any songs that it couldn't match are backed up though before you remove them from iTunes. As the article above mentions as long as you don't tell iTunes to remove from iCloud the matched music will always be there.

Now that Iíve uploaded and matched everything, I want to trust in the cloud. Can I delete everything off my computer and just use my stored Match collection from iCloud?

Sure. Apple doesnít require you to have a local copy of your files, so you can theoretically match and upload everything to the cloud, then delete all those files from your computer. We will say, however, that while itís likely that the iTunes Match servers are ironclad, and thereís little risk of losing your data, flying without any backup is never something we recommend. (If you want to save space on your main computer, you should make a copy of your iTunes Media folder and stick it on an external drive, at the very least.)

I still recommend some kind of local backup for you Music folder though. Just use an external that's not hooked up.

Good & not-so-good:

I'd have to Download the music onto a 16GB iPhone
to play at parties thru my Altec Lansing devices.

IOW I'd still need a computer to stream music.

It's still Great... I can still have my cake to eat
when I eventually get a newer computer.
...but until then -- only by the slice.

$25.00 a YEAR? Still definitely worth it! smile

I think you misunderstood what was in the links and the paragraph I quoted. They explain it all quite clearly.

The purpose of Match is so that you don't have to load up your devices or computers with the music, it will just stream down when you want to play it. Also it doesn't need to be on the computer, you can delete it all from iTunes and just stream from your phone. Just make sure when you delete it from iTunes you don't tell it to delete from iCloud.

Also IMO back up your music before you delete as a precaution.

Thank you for the links.
I read more than just the paragraph you quoted
I went so far as to read the other pages linked
off the initial source link.

Although my blind azz might be misreading the
article but I thought it says it will only STREAM
thru a computer.. and Download to iOS Devices.

and I wasn't planning on deleting anything..
just hedging my bet 4 when the G4 craps the bed.
but yes, I have a HD I can dedicate to that purpose

That's the beauty of it, it sreams to the phone/iDevice. I can access all of my 200?G of music on my 16G 4S from anywhere. Yes, 4S. shocked 6S+ upgrade coming, but this thing has been cranking and doing what I need for 4 years. I use my phone for mainly a, uh, phone and intermediary Apple ecosystem appliance. laugh

Cheaper to do Match than have to pay for a 128G phone which still wouldn't hold it all. 128G is still lame, we need an expansion slot.

Most of my non-wirelss streaming is in the car and I never come close my 3G data cap with ATT. Also they have monthly rollover so it's usually 5G. XM doesn't use much but they've become too expensive for what they have to offer, considering Pandora et al. Probably dropping XM.

'Nuther Question:

Although I've held an Apple Account for years,
and used to have i iDisk Account, I don't make
much use of iCloud.

QUESTION:
When do I have to PAY For iTunes Match?

If you need to pay up-front as soon as you
Activate iTunes Match, I'll have to wait at
least until Next Month. frown

I don't believe they have a trial.

It is amazing that it can be used with 10.5.8 though.
