I don't often see PCs that I like that aren't a rip off of Macs... but this one caught my eye for design and overall looks. Of course it's $1699.00 with only 1 4TB HDD... but you have 4 bays you can expand into..
Damn thing is 62 lbs.

The processor benchmarks the same as the $3000 Mac Pro, but all the other specs seem to blow the Mac Pro away, except the MacPro has dual video cards. The Dell video card blows away the Mac Pro model though.

The dual video card Dell totally blows any of the Mac Pros out of the water for only $600 more than the base, and $400 less than the top end.

The specs are so off the charts as compared to the Mac Pro.

Cool design.

I don't get it.
Why have Mac's been so consistently behind in the spec wars, yet still charge a premium? I understand that OS X is great and all, but Windows seems to have caught up (To a certain degree). Isn't it passed time they upgrade the Mac Pro?

What's up with the 5400RPM hard drives? For a gaming PC, I would think you would want SSD drives all around. And what's funny is that Win7 costs $70 more than the 8.1 that comes with it for free.

Personally I think it's an ugly design. Alienware used to have some cool PC's but now that Dell has owned them for awhile...yuck.

oh but hey! You can get shirts! laugh

The Mac Pros are over two year old tech. They shipped Sept 2013. That means the design is at least 2.5 years.

The HHD is the standard base option... look at the site... there are BTO options including SSDs.

That's true. The Dell can take four hard drives. You can't put any extra hard drives in the Mac Pro. You can't even replace the flash drive with a third-party unless someone has come up with an alternative by now. Any hard drive expansion would have to be external thunderbolt.

Yeah.. it's similar to Apples Mac Pro aka cheese grater version.

Are you saying that you can't upgrade as a user? or that you can't use a third party drive?

I figured someone would come up with an alternative. I also figured being the inter-tubes and all if I was wrong some anal retentive would let me know.

***cough, cough***

grin wink

BTW, saw one at Micro Center, they are pretty cool looking, pic kind of doesn't do it justice.

The Apple article is to show the consumer how to do it since it won't void warranty. Before OWC came out with theirs you could buy a bigger one from Apple or use one from a MBAir for example, and replace it yourself.

OWC just came out with it at the beginning of the year though, it was the first after a year and a half. I can't keep up, Sosumi. smirk

Actually, you can get Samsung SSD modules for the MacPro 2013 off eBay (got a 1TB module in February -- been working great ever since =). I tried the OWC drive, but removing the two security screws needed to install the thing proved impossible without stripping 'em, and there's no work-around. So back it went, unfortunately. Also, I really like their products, but that thing is a behemoth.

Where did you install the Samsungs? Are there other PCIe slots?

The slot the original SSD was in. Same form factor and everything (except the physical shield, which doesn't seem to make a difference (so far! ;-). Apple uses Samsung SSDs for their drives in that model (or, at least, that's what they used originally -- maybe they've changed since then), but the form factor is the same. So: pop out the old, pop in the new. No unscrewing of security screws or anything =)

[edit]

Okay, editing because maybe that's not what you are asking. To be clear, I *replaced* the original SSD. AFAIK Stating as fact: there is no slot for an additional SSD. Which, yes, is a bummer. But this thing takes up a fraction of the space the cheese graters did and so far out-performs them handily for what I do. And external drives have proved to be no problem so far -- I have three externals, whereas I had four internal in the old one, and I've noticed no detriment in performance so far ...

Obviously, YMMV =)

So the heads of the screws where the driver tip goes in stripped even with their security torx?

Good info about the Samsung SSDs BTW. Didn't know that.

They would have if I had kept trying. As it is, they're blunted a little bit. Apparently, Apple does NOT want those screws undone. It looks like they have that blue stuff on the threads that pretty much seals them into the holes ...

Loctite, sneaky bastiges. The blue stuff is supposed to be for screws you may want remove on occasion, if the head is strong enough. The red stuff needs heat to loosen it.

It's good that you were able to figure out an easier solution anyway. I don't know why the OWC board is such a monster.
