My sister has a 2009 iMac with only 1 GB Ram.
She can no longer access Google, Gmail or YouTube.
She's running 10.5.8, and says Software Update/App Store has nothing to offer.

Question:
What is the difference between the cheap RAM and the expensive?

OWC RAM

Edit: Oops. One is 4GB, the other is Two 2GB.
Thanks, everybody! blush

If it's a 2009 iMac that's the wrong RAM.

In System Profiler, is it an iMac 8,1 or 9,1?

Yeah, I was wondering about that. She said the "Software" was 2009, I assumed she meant the machine. It still irritates me Apple is so chintzy with RAM.

Have there really been so many updates, that Google and Gmail wouldn't work?
I don't care about Youtube, but accessing the rest are critical.
Any suggestions?

I have a iMac 11,3 and OS X 10.6.8 and have issues left and right with Safari. Web pages don't respond well.. reload over and over (Huff Post) and title bars disappear (FB). I have to constantly reload FB cuz I can't see options on the bar like messages, etc.
My bank tells me every time that my browser is out of date and not supported. So does Gmail.

Good note.. for you. I just updated/upgraded my Moms iMac 7.1 to 4 GB ram and Mavericks and it's all good.

http://forums.applecentral.com/ubbthread...tion#Post623786

I'll be doing 2 more Macs of my own in the week or so.

Part of the problem. Mavericks requires 10.6.8, but she's running 10.5.8.
Should I send her the installation disc, or have her update to Yosemite?
Or does Yosemite require 10.6.8 too?

It's not the RAM, more so the age if the OS.

Although I just fired up the old G4 with 10.5.8. Google works fine, gmail puts up a notice at the top that the browser is no longer supported but I can access my gmail, youtube says the same but you can continue on.

Both in Safari 5.0.6 and FireFox 3.6.13

Maybe you could just increase ram and move to Snow Leopard. That may be a big enough improvement for a while. smile
Is she local?

Do you have a recommended OS she should use?
She has no interest in the latest or greatest, she just wants her computer to work tongue

Edit: I would have to mail her the disc and talk her through it…

Don't have to. Scroll down to The quick-but-techie way. My instructions let you use Terminal instead of getting another app though.

I just did the following on 24 iMacs, works great.

You need to change one number in SystemVersion.plist, it's located in System/Library/CoreServices

In Terminal type;

cd /System/Library/CoreServices then hit Return (space after cd)

Then type;

sudo pico SystemVersion.plist then hit Return (space after sudo and pico)

It will ask for a password, when you type the password it won't show anything typing but it is going in, then hit Return.

You will have to use the arrow keys to navigate. Arrow down to;

<key>ProductVersion</key>
<string>10.5.8</string>

Not the one above it;

<key>ProductUserVisibleVersion</key>
<string>10.5.8</string>

Under <key>ProductVersion</key> change 10.5.8 to 10.6.8. To do that, using the arrow keys move the cursor to the . after the 5, hit Delete, type 6.

Type control-O then hit Return which will save the changes. Then type Control-X to exit.

You're done, you can install 10.7 or above now without having to install 10.6.8 since the installer will think it's 10.6.8.

You probably won't be able to install anything new until you upgrade the RAM though.

LOL! (I'm sending the disc in the mail) grin

I appreciate that, but there is no way I'm going to talk her through Terminal commands and have something go wrong. shocked

Fine here. Slow as hell of course but they loaded and worked. Of course it was just for a short time.

4 hours round trip. It's not that I don't love her, but… wink

She ordered the RAM from OWC, and SL from Apple.
She also just said everything is working this morning. Go figure…

She needs to upgrade. She'll be better off for it.
Thanks for the help!

(Stay tuned for next weeks episode of, "How the Apple Turns").

I know it's basic but have you emptied the Safari Cache under Reset Safari? Clear web page icons too.

Install Team Viewer on both machines so you can remote in to her.

Unless you don't love her that much. grin

Easy peasy. RAM installed in 15 minutes. Snow Leopard in about 45, and the endless updates after. Total time: 2 hours. She says it's like a new machine. I'm keeping her on SL for a while. Why not?

The BIG question… How much do I charge her? laugh

Thanks for all the help.
