They're BIG & NOISY but relatively passive when it comes to PEOPLE... you gotta pretty much grab one and slap it around to make one sting you...
But you're quite right about them Patrolling Their Territory... I never thought of their persistent droning, darting & hovering as "Defensive"but then I never saw them encounter any other frying creature as I went about my gardening with them droning around my head...
...yeah... they're BIG! Bet they'd could put up one hellova fight.. if they had a mind to.

Stumpy..Bees and wasps are attracted to the color yellow.... many feeders have bits and baubles of this color... The color red as we all seem to know does appeal to these little jewels....I have a red cap I put on when sitting on the deck...get one and you will see the little buggers up close...I also grow scarlet running beans every year...a great vine that grows like a weed...the seeds are large and colored pink with black spots....and the beans are great to eat...i plant these and red varieties of morninglories here there and everywhere on the farm...put them in the ground and forget about um I found a link covering many of the things I do to keep them happy...it has a lot of info RE: bugs http://www.hummingbirds.net/feeders.html Hope it helps everyone here with bug problems love my birds
