I have a road trip coming up in a couple of weeks — driving to Boston to meet my new Grandson. Actual driving time is a/b 13 hours each way, and there will probably be a few long stretches where I can turn the app off for a while. I'm trying to estimate how much data I'll use. AT&T has a data usage calculator on their site, but GPS is not on the list, and when I called tech support, they couldn't tell me either. My guess is that it's about the same as streaming music (which is pretty small). My plan is only 2 gigs of shared data, and I never use more than a fraction of it. But I'd hate to exceed my limit and get hit with overage fees.

Anyone have any experience with long drives on iPhone GPS?

No way that will make a huge impact... at least not in my experience. Shut it off when not needed... those long stretches... and just use it when needed.

Apple maps had a big problem when they first came out with it... but I have been using it exclusively and only had wrong directions a few times. having said that...

Just get on 80 until you get to 87, then head north. If I were you I'd stay on 87 till you get to the Mass Pike. AVOID AVOID AVOID Connecticut. We went up to Boston a couple of weeks ago and went up 84. It took us 4 hours to get through Connecticut. AVOID AVOID AVOID Connecticut.

GPS is free, it's the downloading of the maps that uses the data. I'm thinking it's around 35M an hour. Since 3/4 your trip is on 90 E it should be a drop in the bucket. You can do the math.

There is a free app, CoPilot. You can download a NA/Canada map ahead of time, < 2G space on your phone. It has the ability to use GPS only, look in the CoPilot settings. Download the NA/Canada map when on wireless. Don't interrupt the d/l. Let it finish. Trust me or you delete and start over. Only bug I saw when I first used it. What do you want for free, but it works.

It has voice Nav but that costs $10.

So after being on 90 E for a couple of hours and you want to know where you're at, CoPilot will show. It works great for specific locations too. It has a recalculate function.

If you want to make sure you don't use Cellular data turn off Cellular data on the phone in Settings/Cellular but CoPilot supposedly won't if you set it right.

BTW, to get your current billing cycle ATT data usage dial *3282#, it sends a free text message. I have the entry as AAAAData in my Contacts.

No idea, I believe the Yahoo/Google. It seems 80 is few miles shorter, but 90 is less squiggly, squiggly is a technical term.

Last time I went East it was the 76 PA turnpike to NJ. Looong hilly boring mofo. Will this ever end. I've been driving for over 4 hours and I'm still on the PA Turnpike?

Just traveled from FL to northern NY by way of Williamsburg, VA. 200MB data used with the maps app (only used it for general time and distance checks and close-in navigation), FaceBook, and Email. I'm assuming using the satellite images would use a bit more data.

This is all great info, y'alls! I have three route options — all within a half hour differential, and a/b 40-mile difference. My destination is actually a/b midway btwn Boston and Providence, RI, and the route I've selected does cut through CT, so I may take another look at the alternatives.

In any case, it doesn't seem like the data usage will be an account killer.

10Q2much! smile
