12 years ago, she tripped on the end of a comforter hanging over the bed, and hit her head on the end table, crushing the spinal cord in her neck. She was flown to San Francisco emergency, and I drove her husband 150 miles in the rain to the hospital, on Halloween night. All hotels were booked, but a house down the street had rooms for people who had friends or family that were in the hospital that were dying frm AIDS. They let us stay, free of charge. Wonderful people. Little did we know, the street outside our window was Castro Street, and they were throwing the biggest Halloween block party ever. If you know the Castro, that was a mile long party. Needless to say, I knew I wouldn't get any sleep, so after 26 hours of being awake, I decided to join in, until we could go to the hospital the next day. One of the most surreal nights of my life. After numerous operations, months of therapy, she finally came home. "The Miracle Girl", they called her. But it was 12 years of agonizing pain, which got worse each year. Pressure wounds, third degree burns, cancer, endless operations, and never once lost the thing that made her who she was. Her amazing mind was always sharp as a tack, no matter how much her body failed her. Last month, after another weeks stay in the hospital (Which she always came back worse tha when she went in), she decided enough is enough, and stopped eating and drinking to finally end the agony. Tonight, she passed away while I was holding her hand. My best friend and Mother. I'm so happy you're finally at peace, and in pain no more. I will love you always, your son, Curt
