Goin’ back to work for The Man. I’ve been in the ad biz for more than 40 years as an art director, writer, and creative director. Half the time as a freelancer, and half as an agency employee. An offer for an agency ECD position brought me to Dayton 7 years ago this month, and when that shop started its death spiral a year later, I bailed out and re-hung my shingle here instead of going home to Boston.
The first four years were great, but business began to soften midway through 2012, and last year was as dry as the Mojave — with no rain on the horizon.
In the meantime, one of the bigger commercial printers in Dayton that I’ve worked with a lot during my time here has been expanding rapidly and morphing into what they call a “marketing execution” company. They offer a unique range of printing processes; mailing services and database management; promotional items; and website development. Now they want to market the package nationally, and they’ve asked me to join them as their strategic marketing sensei!
This is a new mountain to climb, though I’ll still be involved in some creative output from time to time. Big change, but I’m looking forward to it. I start right after Memorial Day.
LOL! More like corner cube with a panoramic view of more cubes. And it's far from big bucks, But it's steady, which freelance isn't always — and with my SS bennies, it works out to a decent number. Plus, I'll get 25% of any business I bring in. And two of my remaining clients will, in fact, follow me.
