Watched a History channel program a few weeks back about the Allied bombing during WWII. The allies lost an enormous number of bombers for what seemed to be moderate damage to German war effort. To the point after the introduction of the P-51 Mustang, that the bombers were launched to lure the Germans to bring up their fighters. Then our escort fighters had a great advantage.
Of course this synopsis is somewhat simplified but the results are still the same. Added to this that the Brits bombed at night and Americans at day keeping the German defenders from getting adequate rest making them less effective. Using these tactics we decimated the Luftwaffe before D-day
I think of this because one of my brothers was a waist gunner flying in a B-24 among other bombers. Think he was used as bait rather rankles me.
