This kind of goes along with the other thread on the constitutional rights versus common sense. But today we got in a discussion at school about whether or not students should have the right to carry arms on campus – either open or concealed. And there are opinions on both sides.
However I told the chairman if this is ever allowed; they would NOT see me teaching on campus ever again. I will not teach in a environment where students can carry a firearm. I think it just sets a dangerous presence. What happens if two of these testosterone driven males dislikes each other and gets into a gunfight and you have a lot of innocent students caught in the crossfire? What happens if a student doesn't like the grade he received on a test and just loses it in the classroom? This makes about as much sense as allowing people to carry guns into bars. We have a campus security that is their job to provide a secure environment; so no one has to carry a weapon on campus to feel safe. If everyone wants to carry a weapon to feel safe then why the hell do we need a security force ?? We could change the T in TJC from Tyler to Tombstone!!
This is just ludicrous and crazy. But this is TexAZ.
I was on an NEH seminar back in '92, in Tucson. A beautiful town with some beautiful people. But coming from where I come, I was freaked out completely by the open carrying of guns. Going to the supermarket sometimes was like finding myself not only in the west, but in the Wild West. I couldn't wait to get back east, I have to say.

Student may have a gun now. You are in danger now if students want to shoot you. Surely you don't think that a disgruntled student willing to commit murder would bother with a silly law saying he can't have a gun on campus.
If we don't count our blessings We are just wasting our time
No a law won't stop him, but if caught with a gun on Campus, he's expelled and will probably go to jail. Also - He's got to walk through several Campus Security people who ARE carrying guns.
I never thought an ex-cop might shoot someone over texting in a movie theater ether, but it happened ! Point is a gun has NO place in class. ONLY reason some might carry is because others might carry. Can't you see it's a catch -22. IF no one carried, NO ONE would need a gun ! One might say well there are "bad guys with guns". Yes there are , but that's why I pay taxes to hire POLICE ! Only reason bad guys have them is guns are more prolific than roaches ! A 13 yr. old can get one - proved it few weeks ago !! Harder to get booz or cigs than a gun !!
It's all about a gun lobby (and NRA) that like to sell guns ! Sales slump, they go on Fox and say "BO is coming to get yor guns!" Sales jump !! Idiotic paranoid public ! I don't want to live in the Fk-ing Wild West where I have to worry about some kook going off and killing people ! or some one or some student having a bad day ! Mass paranoia ! Someone described to me the elaborate set up they had at home in case of an intruder... my GOD, if I had to live that way I'd go nuts! A gun here in a lock box - (fingerprint opening)... gun here, a gun there, a gun over there in that room... strobe lights, laser beam sights... Really... I believe THAT's paranoia !! You don't live in Fort Knox !!
And the analogy of the Prof protecting himself... if the kid wants to shoot you- he has the drop on you- you better pray he misses... NO way you could beat him to the draw... he's probably going to wait until your back is turned any way ! That's just a lame excuse. NOT practical ! Even if he misses are you going to be able to whip around, draw your weapon, sight the shooter in a class of 40+, and fire before he fires a 2nd round ? Fk-ing NO !! That's the problem with the excuses... they're not well thought out ! Sorry, Dave... I don't buy into it!
