I'm assuming by reading your links, that the case was similar to others I've read about through the USDA; Handling cattle called "Downer Cows" that are stressed, injured, sick, dying, and even dead, that are routinely prodded, or lifted to their feet using fork lifts, or even scoop loaders and brought into the slaughter house and processed for consumption.
..Of course this practice made quite a splash when Mad Cow Disease became a serious issue worldwide.
Yes, the Question is why is this allowed? Why do we allow for the slaughter of sick animals? They probably should be killed and culled but their meat should not be put into the general food supply. My God are they that profit hungry? I can guarantee the cost of one or two Sick cows is a lot less than recalling 89,000 pounds of beef. Stupid if you ask me, & they should be heavily fined.
And what makes it worse is that most of this meat went to kids! This is the worst possible target you could give this crap to because they are still growing and their metabolisms are all revved up, so any "poisons" will do far more damage and it will be lasting.
I remember some prissy chick on a former forum making a big deal about some story about a FRIED FLY found in a BUGGER King burger...

I posted the USDA Guidelines pertaining to the ACCEPTABLE AMOUNT of INSECT PARTS per unit in ALL PROCESSED FOODS.
The Fried Fly was obviously a One-Off Restaurant Issue because the general USDA Guideline states that as long as said "Insect Part" (or rodent dropping/rodent hair) is Small Enough not to be "discernible" by the human eye then it's acceptable for human consumption.
