I got a new iPad Air when they first came out, also with Applecare.
Had to call Apple and they fixed me up and I asked if they could answer a Time Machine question that was not under Applecare. Told them I got it as a consolation prize a couple of years ago and had never set it up. He asked what the question was and continued to set it all up for me. It seemed like an easy, simple and fast operation. So I am now with a back up disk [external] for SuperDuper and the Time Capsule hard drive for Time Machine backups. I feel a lot more secure once again.
