Claims to be disabled. Have you been following this incident?

http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/22/us/utah-boulder-boy-scouts/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

A Boy Scout leader leading a troop of kids In a park in Utah, pushed against a rock formation until he toppled the rock where it had been resting for eons. A friend took a video of his doing it and it went viral.

He claims he did it to save peoples lives who would be hurt by the rock.

Now it is reviled that he has applied for disability a few weeks before. Will be interested to see how this plays out.

In most of these parks there are signs all over telling folks not to mess with the rocks. Can't imagine what was going through his head. It sure wasn't trying to save lives.

I did. It is so obvious they knew exactly what they were doing. They thought it was cool to "change" something that had not changed in 20 million years. They started joking about it not being safe at the end of the video, so that is what they are saying in their defense. I really hope they can charge these guys with something - they put the damn thing on youtube for crying out loud. Are you sure they were with a troop? I didn't hear that part. I thought they were by themselves.

No, not sure they were with a troop.

Don't think so, but they need to set a good example and follow tenets even if not with a troop.

The National Boy Scouts of America and the organization's Utah National Parks Council issued almost simultaneous and similar statements Monday addressing the men's actions.
The local council statement said the former leaders violated the Scouts' principle of "Leave no trace," which it said "teaches the value of natural areas and the methods we can use to help protect and conserve these areas for future generations."

"Think of the children!" crazy

Fine them heavily, fire them from the Scouts, ban them for life from State Parks, and about 10,000 hours of community service.

WHAT A DORK! mad
Yes they were with a BS Group
(They've since been dismissed for breaking the rule
against defacement ("Not Leaving Anything Other Than
Footprints") for setting bad examples for youngsters.

IMO They should face FINES for defacing a Monument.

Have you ever seen one of those Spinning Rock Fountains
A Sphere ...usually made of marble, or alabaster...
set into a hollow, held up and made to bounce & spin
by the force exerted by the water?

...we used to camp in a secluded area that had a natural
"spinning ball" waterfall such as that... REALLY KEWL!

the water ran down a granite rock-face, that had eventually
carved out a shallow bowl, the far end eventually wore away to create a water fall.. the force of the water
shot the water far enough out to hollow out another
bowl shaped pool beneath that (that we used as a swimming
hole wink )

OK... what made the whole set-up so unique was that
the force of the water had carved a notch that formed the water fall... the notch was shaped like a wine glass, but opened at the front and back allowing the water to pass through... and captured within the wineglass was a large rock sphere, about twice the size
of a bowling ball, and warn completely smooth by the force of the water which caused the sphere to endlessly spin as the water forced it's way passed the boulder.

The boulder constricted the flow of the water in such a way that it caused the water to shoot out of the notch in the wine glass all the way out into the middle of the pool below.

Without a doubt.. A Natural Phenomonon to behold!
What FUN!!! laugh

until one wekend when we got there, some jackass
had used a tree trunk to lever out the spinning ball
and drop it into the pool where it became a hazard for those
who'd once delighted in diving into the pool..
Now the water , instead of shooting out in a rainbow
display we loved to swim though.. letting the water
to flood over us like kids playing in the spray of a fire hydrant...
th water was trickling down the rock face into a muddy
mess that it had now made of the beautiful ferns that once surrounded the pool.

frown

I suppose the jackass would have used the same defense
"Potentially saving lives" but it too would have been
so much BS.
The boulder would have harmlessly spinning for another hundred years... and the chances of hitting anyone
when it broke free would still have remained a million to one.

ANother (but less spectacular instance) was some other
mindless/thoughtless PoS who drunkenly smashed their
beer bottles against the granite face of the rock
above another of our long-time swimming holes.

There was just NO WAY to make it safe again for swimming

WHY? What purpose did it serve?
WTH knows why some people
do what others think of as "unthinkable"

/end of sad rant
