OK, I'm wondering what is the most efficient way to get your own web site listed with all these major search engines, without spending an arm and a leg to do it?

Please don't tell me it's gonna cost you...

Go to each site and submit your site manually. It's really the best way.

Start with Open Directory. Many smaller search engines use the database for their own searching. It is NOT an automated search engine -and that's a good thing. Someone actually goes to your site and indexes it and rates it based on its content. This way, porn sites can't submit their pages filled with keywords that lead other search engines to believe they are something else.

Go to Spider Food for more information.

I used AddMe.com when I first built my two web sites. At the time you could submit your site to 35 search engines for free. Now it is only 14 search engines.
I would also suggest reading some of the good articles on this page, from the AddMe.com past newsletter issues.

[color:red]Listen...

I agree with Gizmo - dmoz.org is the best way of being listed. They seem to include you in their directory within 14 days of registering and the major search engines add you within about 6 weeks from then. But once again to rate highly you need to address all the titling, metatag keyword and description and cross matching body text issues. Be warned though - if you get a grumpy editor at dmoz they may not list you at all!

Need a laugh? Visit CreatorDude.com

5000th post in this forum.

Ok back to the topic at hand...

"If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something. "
The "Spider Food" web site I posted above has a lot of tips/pointers for optimizing your site to get listed in engines... take a look at it, as I have found that much of the tips worked quite well for me.

I have a small website that was designed for use by my car club, I went to some of the car related search engines and submitted it, then swapped links with a bunch of other car clubs.

One day I Googled my website just to see if It would pop up and darn there I was all over the place, and in places that most websites have to pay for wow ain't that a trip

[color:purple]keep on truckin' brother

the swapping of links really works. I read that the more your site is linked to from others really helps in search engine standings.

[color:red]Listen...
Yep... that is very true. So much so that I tell my clients not to bother with paying for those search-engine optimization companies and just to "link-trade" with as many sites as possible.

It really depends on the demand of a category your submitting to. Your site can be listed seconds after you submit it to more then a year after you submit it.

Ryan
Edited by morserj on 04/28/03 05:23 PM (server time).
