It also makes the cast look clever about getting things right...

You obviously haven't seen the episode where they get something horribly wrong.

I would like to hear more details of Maggie's and Carl ( I think that's his name) situation in Africa that precipitated in her changing her hair this sounds interesting

As to the quick witted responses.. I can believe it. I have known many people who have a quick retort for nearly every situation. (Have you guys even met Steve G?) cool eek .
They are positioning themselves as a major news network... not some lil podunk tv station.

What do you think would happen if you put Ken Oberman and Chris Matthews and John Stewart at the same table?

These Newsroom people (characters) are cutting edge.. that's how they got the job... by thinking 4 steps ahead.

If you want to watch the same ole dialogue... go elsewhere.
Didn't hear anyone complaining when Hawkeye always had a witty response on MASH.

Purely out of curiosity...
...what News Channel do you watch in the Real World?

Maggie became close to a little kid while in Africa.
He used to beg her to read to him... the same book,
over & over again... even though it was pretty clear
that he wasn't able to fully comprehend English.
He'd sit in her lap for hours touching her hair as
she read to him because he'd "never seen anyone
with hair that color before".

It was pretty clear that having been orphaned in the
on-going civil war, that what he really wanted was
to be wanted... he'd chosen Maggie as his surrogate
mother, and being pretty "needy" herself at that
moment in time, Maggie bonded with him in return.

The day of the attack by rebel forces, he came running
to her only to find her not there, when Maggie noticed
he was missing she instinctively knew he would have
run to her... and indeed they found him cowering under
her bed........... that was the pivot point............

She dragged him out from under the bed and made a
dash for the vehicle to save his life... but in the
process, was responsible for his death (at least in
her mind) because a rebel SHOT AT HER as a moving
target.. and the little boy took the bullet instead,
so in essence, he'd saved HER Life instead.

No matter what anyone said, she couldn't help feeling
HAD SHE LEFT HIM HIDING HE'D NEVER HAVE DIED.
Or if it Weren't For Her HAIR That He'd Fixated On,
he would have run away with the rest of the children.

"...IF IF IF IF IF..."

I can imaging combat veterans are left to live with
those often irrational thoughts for the rest of their
lives... Maggie just wasn't equipped to deal with it.

Having been to Uganda, I can verify that kids there love to touch a white person's hair. Even the hair on my arms..they were just really curious. They don't see too many mzungus. wink

Doano if you'd missed the episode
that showed it all going down...
Other than that, it was all pretty
low-key... you had to be paying
close attention to the interaction.

What news channels do I watch in the real world? Well, usually I check CNN . I get most of my regular TV news from them. During the debates I, I tried to catch CNN, msnbc, and FOX. To get different perspectives on the analyseses . That way I can get upset with everyone. But, day to day I get my news from the same online sites as above but also check ABC, google, and NPR. I check these sites several times a day.

But, as to the show The Newsroom, it's produced by some very heavy liberal folks so its going to be that. Like any program on TV it is just a show. It's fiction. Like Boardwalk Empire, Dexter. Each has its own premise.

I do like the performances Of several of the actors on The Newsroom. My favorites are, Jm, Don, Neal, Sloan and Charlie.

Nah, admittedly, I really haven't seen an episode where things go really wrong. I am sure it will.

The snappy dialog doesn't bother me that much, just a bit. Certainly not enough not to watch it. As I said, it reminds me a lot of West Wing: How they could be so busy with a current problem, but switch effortlessly to some other inside joke etc. And I loved that show too.

-I keep waiting for someone to take me to task on my Saul Goodman take, actually. And again, I like him too.
