A friend of mine, just diagnosed with bladder cancer and now getting her initial dose of chemo, wants to know if there is any way that she can reset her DVD drive on the MBP so that it shows zone 1. Apparently she put in a set of zone 2 DVDs and now the laptop won't run zone 1 disks. Also, is there any way that she can become independent of zones--any software that will allow her to show whatever zone a DVD might be? She does work with Brazilian culture, so could really use the ability to have zone 5 disks play on the laptop.

Try VLC, it may play them. Launch it and go to File/Open Disc.
If you can get an exact make and model of the drive from System Profiler I'll check it out. If it can be flashed to RPC-1 firmware she can for sure use VLC player to play the DVDs since DVDPlayer will balk I believe.
