Ted was listening to one this Spring and said, "Idiot! Don't he realize it's not wood by this time?"
So I figured, it must be more than drilling for grubs... ...it must be a sexual attractant as well... females are prolly drawn to the loudest (strongest) males... IOW The Idiot ain't all that dumb after all!
These babies have pretty much destroyed the old tree stumps on our berm. They're awesome.
They're migratory here... I'd hear one that I came to realize was the same bird year after year coming all the way across the neighborhood. Every Spring I'd hear it coming... then in my tree, then recede across the neighborhood, then rinse & repeat come the Fall...
I finally figured out it's a trail of fruit trees which must attract a tastey wood-boring grub... ...it would visit the tree, dig out the grubs from the holes it had drilled the previous season... drill a few new holes, and move on to the next tree.
Not So Dumb After All!
It had established a set migratory route stocked with it's favorite food every step of the way...coming & going!
