Way back when I was in grade school we were taught standard weights and measurements...like a foot is 12 inches, it takes 12 to make a dozen, a yard is 36 inches...and a pound is 16 ounces....some where along the way things changed for the pound...got a pound of bacon lately...it is 12 ounces, a full quarter pound lighter than the pound of bacon of yesteryear....can of Spam..use to be 16oz...now 12 oz...pound of dried beans..12 oz.....did someone change the standards while I was sleeping

A half gallon of ice cream is also several ounces short. I remember when Breyer's, which is what we get, did that. There was no notice, just a new kind of container. It's marked as 1.75 quarts, but on the shelf it takes up the space that the old half gallon took up, and in effect is sold as if it were a half gallon.

as far as I remember it started with COFFEE ...one of Life's 'STAPLES'...
then pasta went - brand by brand ....since then, it's become pervasive.
Take your tri-focals along when marketing and Learn to Comparison-Shop using UNIT PRICE TAGS On Shelves to QWIK COMPARE Prices Per Ounce by Brand.
** Same GREEDY Capitalistic BS as putting the least expensive brands out-of-reach, placing CANDY at eye-level with kids in shopping carts, & impulse items next to the checkout Moving items to the End of the Aisle... giving one the (mistaken) impression that the item is on sale.
...OH... And MY FAVORITE! .99¢ to psych you into thinking everything "IS LESS THAN A DOLLAR"
Doano about anyone else, but when I buy an item for $499.99 I feel like bouncing the friggin' PENNY off the back of the f'n manager's head!
At least a dozen more "Tricks" to increase PROFIT and see families struggling to make ends meet a little poorer for the shopping experience.

You are so right. The prices increased and the containers shrunk. I think it was most noticeable , first, with coffee. I can remember when I bought ground coffee. I haven't bought ground coffee in about 15 years. But even before that I could buy a 3LB can f coffee. Then the can became 36 ounces. Now I think it's 34 or so. A long way from a 48 oz can of 3 LB
Same with vegetable can sizes,. Used to be 16 oz now it 15 or less. Soup cans are 11 oz.
Also I some packaging . Like cereal they have kept the same box but just leave the space empty. Or some bacon packaging. Used to show the bacon through the wrapper, now in some the have a picture f bacon on the front showing great looking, meaty bacon. On the inside, little meat, just fat.
I think itwas last year, I took a box of Weaties, took the amount of wheat in the box and calculated the amount the wheat farmer received at current prices for that wheat in that box. Very little.
All about packaging

Lots of "stuff" like GM Engineered CORN SYRUP and GM SOY, GM RAPE Seed Oil(CANOLA),Starches, "Fillers"and Hydrogenated Fats, that our body never evolved to recognize as "FOOD".
What they're passing off as food these days is downright scary! We're walking time-bombs.
