They came out with one that actually works a few years back, it uses Picaridin. It doesn't last quite as long as DEET, it isn't effective on all mosquitos, most common ones it is, but it is on the disease carrying ones.
Skin So Soft has 10% Picaridin for reference in the following link. They mention a 20% last 8-10 hours, I read where 10% is about 4-5.
I used Repel Sportsmen Max. It is 40% DEET and it worked very well wherever I was able to spray, especially when I was working up a sweat hiking. I just could not reach part of my back and am paying for it now! I have Sting-Ease and that works too but I cannot reach the bites!
I have two cans of Deep Woods off at home and one can will be going into the bag next time.
