I just got back from touring the Adirondacks and upstate New york via western PA. It was very picturesque with the rolling hills and mountains, small farms, and quaint towns. I even saw my first bald eagle in the wild on the way up.
I camped west of the actual Adirondack Park for a few days. It was next to a state forest. I like to take hikes when possible so I can see up-close a lot of what I miss while I riding.
One of the more bizarre things that happened while hiking is that the trail I was on was flooded due to an overnight rain (it was along a swamp). It was pretty deep (maybe a couple of feet) and I did not feel like hiking for miles in wet feet so I was staring to find logs to make a footpath.
I then looked up and out of nowhere, a FedEx truck came down the trail! I had not seen a person, let alone a vehicle in over an hour as it was in a pretty remote place. He crossed the flooded area and then let me hop on the back and backed over the swamp. He stated that his GPS showed the trail was a road and was just following the directions. It made for a much nicer hike.
I use MotionX-GPS to keep track of my hikes and it works well (time includes starting to find logs to build a footpath).

LOL, and do you know what FedEx charges to deliver to what they consider a "rural" address? More than triple their regular rate. I had to overnight some papers to my X in Lake Elsinore, CA a couple of years ago. $80 for what would be normally be a $22 fee!

I sure did not see any homes in the area. I am guessing it was just a short-cut to an area on the other side of the forest. I think he was just as surprised to see someone as I was! He sure earned his pay at least in making my day!

Yeah but it was worth the $80 to be a free man wasn't it ?

The scenery looks downright familiar! I used to camp the Catskills so often I shoulda' considered erecting a MailBox.
Peekamoose Mt between Sundown and Ellenville, NY.
if'n you're not familiar with the scenic North Eastern forests... watch grabbing logs they're (in)famous for housing Eastern Rattlers.
No biggie, just mind where you're grabbing (& stepping)
I was very mindful of what critters could be lurking under the rocks and logs, especially on a sunny day near a swamp! I was even throwing rocks at where I was thinking of crossing to see what would pop up.
Yeah.. Sunny days, warm outcrops = Copperheads lowland bogs and swamp = Water Moccasins
but most critters choose to go the other way as long as they have a choice. It's taking them by surprise or causing them to feel threatened that's usually the danger.
