About a year ago, I was invited to participate in the praise band at church. The idea was to spell the regular bass player when he needed a day off.
So I've been re-learning how to read music, but with a limited amount of time to devote to it, it's been slow going. Age might also have something to do with it.
We were at practice the other day, and I was talking to the regular bassist whose playing I admire. I mentioned that I'm making some progress with my reading.
In reply, he said, "I don't read music well, either. Those little black dots mean nothing to me!"

After playing with the Virginia state orchestra for three seasons and having to read those little black dots.(53 years ago) I got away from sight reading...and never looked back...did use fake books for a while but even those are now old hat
