Are really bugging me. i5 27" 12GB memory. I downloaded iStat widget a while ago to monitor my fan usage, but I can't figure out what's causing them to kick in. Hard drive fan goes up to 3880+ and the top gets really hot. I have a theory (don't laugh). It only seems to happen when I have Facebook open in Safari. I've reset PRAM and SMU to no avail. The thing is, I can be using Photoshop, Illustrator, burning DVDs, etc. and it doesn't happen. Too many tabs open in Safari? I dunno…

Well, so, okay, how about this then? I have 3 external hard drives connected to the iMac. 2 USB, 1 Firewire. One for music, one for movies, one for business files/Time Machine. Could that be causing the internal HD to get hotter? Should I eject them when not in use?

All Processes? I've always looked at the Real memory column. Kernal task: 670MB. Safari Web Content:508MB Safari: 320MB They are always at the top memory usage. I knew Safari Web Content was evil, but I thought I would be okay with 12GB ram.

All Processes, got it. Had it set on My Processes. Data written is 2.35GB, but the fans are not spinning right now. Will check when they do. Could it be that during the day, it's 80º + in my house? It gets way hotter than that here, and I never used to experience this with "normal" usage.
All the other numbers you gave are just total stats since the last reboot, or maybe log out, I forget, but Data Written/sec and CPU% are current draws.

Figured it out! The intake holes on the bottom of the iMac were clogged with dust. I wish there was an easier way to unclog them besides wiping down and using compressed air. Feel like I'm shoving more dust into the machine.
