It states that it is so it can be more in line with international travel standards. I still wouldn't be inclined to carry one when I travel. Even if I did, it would be in my checked baggage.

I get the international conformity idea. But was it a problem before? And to your point, how necessary is it to carry such items on as plane? Just seems like a big "meh".

Well, I like to be able to take my big ole toenail clippers on board. If I start to feel cramped by the person(s) next to me I just whip out the clippers and start paring down my toenails. By the time I'm done I usually have quite a bit more room around me... sometimes even empty seats for the rest of the flight. So... definitely not a "meh" for me.
