Quality usually trumps volume =D You should take as many photos as you need in order to get the good shots you want ... unless in this case they actually *need* 500 photos to fill-out the Yearbook ;-)

As a comment on the way you are holding the camera: you might try placing your left hand in an underhand position so the base of the camera is resting on the palm of your left hand. This leaves the fingers and thumb of the left hand to adjust the zoom and other controls on the lens. It as gives greater stability for the camera so you can hold it steadier.
This is assuming you can turn your hand in that position.
Just a thought from an old photographer. In the old days we needed to adjust the aperture of the lens that way. Still even with digital cameras , DSLRs , most zooms are manual and on the lens barrel.
