Mail order medications, checks, legal documents, time-sensitive communications... There are lots of items for which a day's delay could be problematic. Business mail in particular. The sender can't always send something a day or two early to make a Friday delivery. It's not a good thing, and worse, it wouldn't have to be if Congress would only overturn the absurd 2006 law that has put the USPS in such a bind.

Says who? Life is not a Mon-Fri 9-5 thing for everyone. If you need critical medications, and you ran out on Friday, should you roll the dice and see if you live through the weekend? The release of some prescription refills are very tightly controlled and cannot be sent early. If you are a business waiting for a signed contract, or a small mission-critical machine part or electronic circuit that can be sent via 1st class mail, do you shut down 'til Monday morning? Or should you incur 10X or more the postage so you can have it sent as a package? Steve, think outside your own living room!

The cuts to Saturday mail delivery do not include postal service packages which will continue as they are now. UPS and FedEx are always there if you choose not to depend on the postal service for package delivery.
The cuts are letter delivery only on Saturday. Soc sec checks, rent payments, and birthday cards will lose one day a week.

Yah, I know. First Class and likely Standard Rate will no longer be Saturday deliveries. But there are a lot of other 13 oz (or less) items that, if needed on a Saturday will have to ship via much more expensive channels.
As a rule, checks, even if deposited on a Saturday, still aren't posted 'til Monday — as if the Saturday deposit never happened. But some banks will actually clear a Saturday deposit by COB of the following Monday.
I'm not suggesting that people will die by the dozen or businesses will fold over the weekend. What's more irritating is the utter stupidity of what's causing this, and the fact that it didn't have to be. That and the POV of some people who think that because it's no skin off their nose, it's no skin off anyone else's. <-- Not pointed at anyone (on the mainland).
I would hope time sensitive things would be labeled as packages and be delivered.
I DO think it's crappy of Congress to screw the USPS and postal workers. It's planned failure !! And the big reason is to attack Unions. It's FUBAR !
Your point about many not being hurt, but many will be is well taken. The USPS says they won;t have to cut people but they will cut OT. That's good IF they can do it (no layoffs), but I'm sure many relied on the OT to make ends meet. and you're right the whole damm thing could have been easily avoided !
