I don't buy it. When polls show over 90% approval of a universal background check and more than 70% approval of AR and HCM bans among non-gun owners, gun owners, and even NRA members, you have a sea change in public opinion that will be very hard for congress to ignore. This will not be an instant turn-around, but the impact will be seen over the next two election cycles.
IMHO, the NRA's clouts has been diminished somewhat. And I think it's the beginning of a trend. Even if Obama can't get one or all of his recommendations through Congress this time, those who block passage will pay a price at the polls in 2014, which will set up the opportunity for even more gains by 2016.
I really believe the NRA will be neutered over the next few years. And that means fewer and fewer people will die by the gun.
Just because you have a + impression of the NRA (barely over 50% at that), doesn't mean you're automatically against banning some guns, or requiring background checks, etc I think their deductive reasoning has a virus in it !!
