I'm leaning toward that, too. In my foggy memory, I think I remember eating these when I was a child. Not terribly sweet, as I recall. I just need to put a correct name to it and verify that they are edible.
It looks like an Heirloom Tomato. I just had one of these the other day. They were ON SALE FOR $7.99/lb at Whole Foods. They're very sweet, and taste delicious.

I binged, googled them, lots of references to cherry tree id, but still not sure what kind of cherry they are, one site suggested that they may be flowering crab apple, fruit looks a lot like cherries..as I remember crab apples from my youth, they were larger

With the comments in the link about eating an unripe one will make you wish you didn't, I thought f persimmons . Wondered if they were related. Well, they are both eudicots , what ever that is.
