JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri Democratic lawmaker is trying to stop "black Friday" shopping from ruining the Thanksgiving dinners of workers.
House member Jeff Roorda, of Barnhart, plans legislation that would prohibit retail stores from opening on Thanksgiving.
He has dubbed it the "Thanksgiving Family Protection Act" and says the holiday should be about families and not about profit or greed. He says Thanksgiving should not become "black Friday eve."
Restaurants, gas stations and drug stores would be exempt from forced closure. Roorda says some other states also require businesses to close on that day.
He says retailers' efforts to out-do one another has left fewer hours for workers to spend time with their families on Thanksgiving.

Another one of those stupid laws. Every galdam time one of thse basturds passes a law it just cuts a little more of the few freedoms we have. Don't they understand that. And it's the same for both sides of the aisle.
folks know that if they work for some employers, that they may have to work at odd hours. Some folks will work mornings , some evenings, some nights some weekends, holidays.
We have people that have to work, or not work, on some days, whether it be a national holiday, Christian, holiday, Jewish holiday, Black holiday, Muslim holiday. It's already a mess.

It is not a new idea at all, even up until the late 1970's we had what was called Blue Laws in Missouri...where retail stores were closed on Sunday and holidays, with only drug, gas stations and restaurants open. In our town even the gas stations were closed on Sunday so people knew that they had to full up by Saturday night if they were going anywhere on Sunday.
I was Adv. Mgr for Woolco Department Stores in Va at the time and there was a huge movement to repeal the Blue Laws there by the major retailers, it finally was repealed, both the retailers and citizens seemed to like it

Funny thing about blue laws. When they were in place the reason for them was religious: the sabbath is holy and shouldn't be violated. Too bad that Muslims do it on Friday and Jews on Saturday. Sunday was the Lord's day, full stop. Now it's not religion that justifies the equivalent of blue laws, and the same folks who loved those laws when they were about religion hate the new proposals. Here in PA the controversy is about keeping blue laws in place when it comes to hunting, cause PA makes it illegal to kill animals on the Lord's Day. Folks are arguing that such laws make it tough for working people to get their hunting jollies--to hell with the good lord!
