Odd that both would go bad at the same time. When you hear the drive mech is that from the kb?
If you hold/tape the doors down will the tray open?
Boot from the Recovery partition if on one of the Lions, or from an install DVD if lower, have a disc in the other tray. Launch Disk Utility from the Installer screen and see if the disc ejects okay from there, to eliminate software. I don't know if the kb would work then but you can try that too.
It's weird. I don't think it's any kind of hardware issue like the case or doors getting in the way. It just seems to be stuck. After burning several items with Toast... I quit Toast and now the trays eject on both just fine.
On another note... I accidentally found out the Option-"Sound MUTE" key combo brings up the Sound Pref Pane.
