Quark has always moved like molasses uphill in December. But that's because they've had no real competiton for many, many years. I'd love to see ID take a bite out of Quark's hind-quarters. If for no other reason but to force them into a more competetive posture. A little humble pie would be good for Quark, and good for us.

I agree with Steveg.

Quark needs to eat some big humble pie. To many years as being the top of the line and king of the hill.

Hopefully that InDesign will wake those people up at Quark.

Sadly that the Founder/Creator/CEO of Quark - retired and the New guy took the company strait to the PC side to generate income. All Quarks resources went into makeing and supporting the Win platform and they forgot about the Macs for along time.

Apple started the revolution MS, Adobe, Quark all got their start developing for Apple.

Shame full is it not.

Well, the move to embrace PC users was a necessary step for Quark to remain afloat. In this context, if you think of software as an aftermarket product, it's important to stay close within the draft of the primary market. Otherwise, your sales slow, and eventually begin to erode. The mistake Quark has made is that they've intruduced PC support at the expense of Mac support, rather than in addition to it.

At this point, either Adobe scares Quark back to action, or ID becomes the Mac standard, and PC weenies adopt QX like a b@stard stepchild. :-7

what are the chances of a small nimble company like Macromedia coming out with a breakout product to take over this space, like they did with webdesign a few years back?

"Ambition is so powerful a passion in the human breast, that however high we reach, we are never satisfied."
-- Niccolo Machiavelli
Anything is possible, but they've marked their territory so well in the web universe, I doubt they'd want to make a move into the world of paper and ink, especially when that market is still dominated by Quark and Adobe. My guess is they'll continue to play to their strength, and leave the page layout wars to the veterans.

They have already entered the fray by incorporating page layout features - poorly IMHO - into Freehand. Their lack of success also shows up in their bottom line, which is a lot of red ink these days. Anybody see any Freehand 10 files lately?

Was Freehand ever really a player? Never used it, and rarely came across files created with it. I'd put it in the same category as Word offering a few page layout wannabe features.

#5826 - 04/28/0208:57 PMYep, I read Mr. Blatner's article in MacWorld.

And for the first time, I found myself considering that I should look into ID. Like I said, it does have features that are very – well, seductive. Sheesh, that I can find software seductive says something, eh?

If I had the bucks, I would get ID2, based on Blatner's dual review. Hah! Take that seduction thing a little further . . . Am I considering fooling around on my most beloved app?

[color:blue]A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men. – W. Wonka

I've been succesfully using Quark since 1990 and refused to try InDesign. It's not easy for me to admit there's a better app. and hope Quark will wake up.
