Ya know what? Apple is really starting to piss me off.
I needed to buy an external optical drive for my Mac Mini, and most of the ones I saw required TWO powered USB ports to run it.
So I thought I would pay the extra bucks and get the Apple drive that only uses one port, thinking I could use it as a portable for all my Macs.
NOPE. Macbook Air and Mini only.
I found a Terminal hack that allows it to be used for everything, but C'MON!
[censored] don't they just allow it to be used with EVERYTHING???
Not liking Apple so much these days…

The ones that have the two port cable almost always can be used with only one of the cables on the dual end, especially on iMacs. Amazon has a Samsung SE-208AB for $30 shipped. They also have a great return policy if it doesn't work out for you.

Should have asked us first. grin

If you're short on USB ports I got one of these and it's been flawless. You can get it for about $24 shipped on ebay.

LOL. That's my one of my big complaints with Macs. So expensive but so few USB ports. I am looking at a Dell next to me, 10 built in USB ports. Two front, 8 in the back. I've always found the ports on Macs only in the back except on cheese grater towers a bit inconvenient too for a modern design.

Most external drives will run fine on a single USB port so long as it's not on a laptop (which generally has lower ampage in the ports).
