Yes, I know you can reduce the size of video files by changing compression ratios etc., but that's non-reversible. I'm wondering whether there's an efficient algorithm for compressing an individual video file, e.g. an .avi or .mp4 file, just for storage purposes, so that it'd have to be unarchived again for viewing, such as 7z or zip or lzx or whatever?

Since most video is already compressed you won't realize much benefit from further compression.. and depending on the original compression and the current compressor.. the resulting file may actually be larger! It's a try and see scenario. Try the built in zip function and after waiting for it to zip up, see if it was really worth the time. I'm guessing no...
NG4 hit it, video, like music, is already compressed. If it does happen to make it wee bit smaller it won't be anything significant, but like he said it may even make it bigger.
