How than can we improve parenting today so the children do not wind up in foster homes or worse sometimes on the street?Sometimes drugs play an influence when especially one of the parents or both are doing it and cannot handle the sheer responsibility of parenting at.A lot of factors influence a child behavior also.I am happy to see you did a great thing and adopted that child and gave this a future to look forward to instead of misery and going from one foster to home to another.I really commend you and your wife for this action on both your parts. It is a pity the mother could not raise that child. That is part of life ups and downs.
I suspect what Jerry meant was that people (parents/doctors) are too quick to prescribe anti-(insert specific problem name here) drugs as a fix for many children who are simply not being paid enough attention by the parents/teachers, etc.
The doctors we saw for my son wanted to prescribe some drugs for him when he was younger. They had no friggin clue what was wrong with him, but were certain that drugs were the fix. My son has Autism, there is no drug that's going to fix that, or even curb the "issues" we were having. He has since grown out of most of those issues, and the rest we're confident he will also move past.
I think there's a time, place and reason for kids being on prescription drugs. But I also have to say that I think society in general has somehow accepted that it's ok to put a kid on drugs because he's acting out - a side effect generally due to being ignored and bored.

I think that's unserstood that if a child has problems then you can prescribe meds.
10 yr old Caucasian male. He is aggressive and was recently in seclusion. He acts out sexually – verbally and in the past physically. He has had suicidal thoughts in the past – a year ago he stabbed himself and attempted to stab a teacher. In the past 6 months he has had homicidal thoughts toward his adoptive mom. He currently plays with feces in order to achieve an errection. He is diagnosed with RAD, ODD, IED and ADHD. He can be manipulative, compulsively lies and destroys property. He is a sweet looking child.
"If it turns out that President Barack Obama can make a deal with the most intransigent, hard-line, unreasonable, totalitarian mullahs in the world but not with Republicans? Maybe he’s not the problem."
Yeah, clearly this kid has problems that go beyond what any meds could fix.
I went to school with a kid like that and was about the same age around 10. We used to call him (Berserk) he stab the schools principle with a pencil, he would have sudden out burst and throw chairs at other students. He would kill people pets, cats and dogs. We all thought he was gonna end up dead or in jail.
Today he is a respected engineer <- go figure. Also not sure if he was on prescription drugs ? or did he just grew out of it.
