Ok, so moving pictures by selecting all and dragging/dropping from one folder to the other on the same hard drive will:
A) move the files over to the new folder, making the original folder empty
B) move the files over to the new folder, but keep the files in the original folder too
Ha! Trick question!
The answer is both! Problem is, you don't know when the Finder will choose A or B.
This apparently is a new problem for me. I have restarted, but it still does it. Oh, and I still get the issue of having to force quit the Finder to get a ghost image (for lack of a better word) off the desktop.

When moving within the same volume, they will do A. Moving to another volume (whether or not it's on the same HD) will invoke option B, unless you Command-drag.
