I thought it was just an app that you use on your phone, but is it dependent on 3G/wifi?
Watching the new ad for the 4s, it looks like it does.
So I wonder how much data it uses when you are on 3G? (I know..it depends on what you ask of it. But is it constantly updating over the air so that it knows your location? or does it use Location Services..which does use data)

Siri does use Location Services when appropriate, as far as I can tell. Also, I believe they're periodically updating the response database to cover more possible questions and Siri has to contact the mothership at least to get those updates.
Also, I noticed on launch day Siri wouldn't work at all because the servers were down, so it seems to be a critical requirement ...

Why aren't you asking Siri? LOL
Heh -- no kidding. I asked it what the meaning of life was the other day and it actually had an answer -- not a very satisfying one, but it did respond ;-)
I'm imagining a cadre of liberal arts majors sequestered in the bowels of the mothership dreaming up new responses to questions that haven't been asked yet ...

Now that is worrisome. why would it totally require to connect to any servers to work?
Can you put your iPhone in Airplane mode and see if Siri works?
Does not work. Requires an internet connection.
Doesn't take much data, and it's fast. I'm guessing they are doing this so siri can become smarter (on the backend) without the need to push software updates. I'm sure Apple also has Siri learning from mistakes and seeing what the most common questions people are asking are.

Thanks for the response!

Heh -- I just asked Siri about Life. I thought asking about the Universe and Everything as well might be a little overwhelming ;-)
Flew to Vegas yesterday and can confirm that Siri does not work at all without an internet connection ... which if you think about it makes a certain amount of sense: on a practical level most of the things you might want it to do involve communication of one sort or another ...

I'd say the size of the database it accesses might be a bit large for a mobile device, or even a desktop. Also the code to parse any possible question is probably fairly large also. More than likely a server along the the lines of the size of a refrigerator might hold it, and that is probably a conservative estimate.
