OK, the iPhone 3gs is now a free upgrade for me. The iPhone 4 upgrade is $99. The 4s is $199. The 3gs is within my financial capabilities. I'd have to lobby the wife for the other options. I could also wait to see if refurbed 4's show up at even a better price.
Please do yourself a favor and go with, at the very least, the 4G. The improvements are much better than the 3Gs. The video and camera capabilities alone are worth it.
I didn't realize Apple would give me $105 for my old 3GS phone. That means I get the 4S for $95 !!! It's an Apple Store gift certificate but that'll cover a case and maybe other accessories.
The main difference I noticed going from 3-4 was the speed increase, and that was the most worthwhile improvement, to my mind. Each new iteration of the iOS demands more of the processor, so an older model is just going to get slower and slower (until the next iOS stops supporting it, of course ).
