Thinking of getting an el cheapo to have.....

Here's the question: Dell or Gateway? There's a Gateway store here with computers in stock.....Dell charges shipping and Gateway charges sales tax, so it's a wash....

It would appear to cost more to build your own PeeSee, than to buy a package deal from a smaller local assembler.

My daughter at art school has been moved onto PS6, and her home machine is going to need replacing. I've decided to build it myself, but so far the parts cost is about 15% more than buying a package through a local retailer.

I'll keep searching for deals but it doesn't look like I can get a cheaper PeeSee for her by building it, rather than if I just buy one.

You might want to talk to Akula over at MacCentral. I built a PC (back in Pentium III days) and it was much cheaper for me - but I wanted very specific items.

The problem with those cheapo machines is that they use cr@ppy parts and *usually* they aren't as upgradeable as you would like.

[color:red]semicolon dash parenthesis

The only real downside of building the thing myself is that it automatically makes me into her IT department. I'm not sure I wanna spend all my days sorting out her PeeSee dramas.

I could get lucky I suppose and she might have a charmed run with the thing. I'm not usually that lucky though.

Take your point about Akula. One of the benefits of having an in-house Wintel Guru, so to speak.

Cheers, Gizmo.

M1.
