It was all of them, Obama's lack of leadership - if we don't raise the debt ceiling then the US will default, can't guarentee old folks will get their SS checks. Congresses lack of.... well anything really. Sure the TP forced the issue - then everybody just ran around like headless chickens saying the sky is falling, we're all doomed.

YES, many to blame including BO. But it was the TP that held the GOP hostage and also everyone else. I agree many mishandled it: the Dems, Boehner, and the President... but I give the TP about 50-60% of the blame. HAD they even been willing to give a little this could have been avoided. I'm beginning to hear the term "Tea Party Downgrade" in the MSM a lot. Any one else hear that ?

As I understand it, Barry and Boehner had come *very* close to sealing their "Grand Bargain" that basically gave everyone much of what they wanted (spending cuts, revenue increases, etc.) to the tune of the 4 trillion everyone seems to agree is the magic number. But Boehner couldn't sell that to the TP faction so he bailed.
I think the lion's share of the responsibility falls on Boehner and the mainstream Republicans' absolute capitulation to the Tea Party faction -- and I hope they pay for it come election time. But we'll see. Perhaps today in Wisconsin will be a bellwether ...
