Welcome back. The mop and bucket are right where you left them. Now get to work.
It was just time — after more than 38 years. We did a Dissolution of Marriage, which is to divorce sort of what FSBO is to real estate. All the forms were filled out on the county courthouse website; no lawyers needed. Which is why there was a profound absence of hostility and contention.
The two cats, the bird, and best of all, my 18-y-o stayed with me, while my ex took her dog and sewing studio and moved in with an old HSBF in Lake Elsinor, CA — right next to the Elsinor Fault! Bwa-ha-ha-ha... every afternoon at 4:15, I face west and jump up and down three times and will the butterfly effect to occur.
My girls handled it well. Of course, my oldest is 33 and living on her own in Boston (and getting married next year, I'm happy to say). Without getting into a lot of personal stuff, I will only say that my X had always been a disruptive force in the family — something that both girls always recognized, and which in recent years strained the relationship between my youngest and her mother. So it was almost a no-brainer for her to decide to stay with me. And since she's 18, there are no custody issues that had to be resolved.
My X had actually left for CA just before Memorial Day to get settled, with the intent to complete the forms and return to Dayton for the hearing, and then take her dog and belongings back to CA for good. To her credit, when she did come back in mid-July, she was amazed at how serene and organized and comfortable the condo had become, and said, "I guess I was the hurricane in the house." That was a major and uncharacteristic moment of self-awareness for her. So of course, in the next breath she found a way to make it all my fault!
But in the end, this will prove to have been best for everyone. And that 'splains the sig.
My next step is to sign up for ChristianMingle.com and wear the biggest, gaudiest mezuzah I can find around my neck for my profile pic, and state my goal of hitting a different shiksha every week!
