Apparently you have to have a newer one to be able to use air drop!
AirDrop is supported on the following Mac models: MacBook Pro (late 2008 or newer), MacBook Air (late 2010 or newer), MacBook (late 2008 or newer), iMac (early 2009 or newer), Mac mini (mid 2010 or newer), Mac Pro (early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card and mid 2010 or newer).
Interesting. I don't have anything to use it with at home anyway, but I'm sure that will disappoint a lot of people with laptops.
The way it works, I can understand why older Macs can't do it. It doesn't connect Macs via the network you are on, it creates its own ad-hoc network and transfers files directly between the two computers. In other words, you shouldn't even need to be connected to the internet for it to still be able to work.
