Once upon a time, not so long ago, songs imported from CDs to iTunes on my iMac stayed in the CD format. They had to be converted to AAC format manually.
Over the last few weeks, I've imported a few tunes, and they've all appeared in AAC format right away. Cool.

That's actually user selectable under iTunes Preferences/General, Import Settings button. Maybe Apple changed the default to AAC. If they did it's actually kind of a bad thing to change import settings without letting you know.

Must've changed with one of the recent updates. O.K. with me, since I always make the conversion, but I can see how someone might want to leave the file as is after importing.
