I have a late 2010 3.2ghz i3 iMac.
For six months, the screen has been nice and bright.
Now, it is very dim...like it looks before the screen goes to sleep.
I have done all of the usual steps:
Zapped the PRAM, left it unplugged for a night, booted into root user to check if it was a software issue, checked the profiles, ran f-disk, started it up with CD...all without any luck.
Of course, I also checked the display preferences.

Of course, this is the only Mac here and I made a big deal about it to.
Wow.. that sucks. I would unplug it and let it sit for 10 minutes, completely unplugged. Have you installed anything recently? I hope it's not the bulbs going out, although typically the go out one before the other so it would be darker at top or bottom. Unless it's the inverter board acting up, then they could both be dimmed equally. I have a hard time believing it's the board, but rather some 3rd party utility or something? Have you unplugged all 3rd party hardware?
That's crazy, I hate dealing with them. If you just boot off of the install DVD it should tell the story. If it's dim when booted off of the DVD it's not the installation that's bad, it's hardware. The backlight board (inverter board) is going bad.

It is dimmed equally.
I do not have any system enhances like Fruit Menu but will try unplugging the USB and FireWire stuff. Last night, I left it unplugged over night with no change.
I did try other profile, and even found one profile damaged that I had to repair via the utility but that did not help either.
