Sorry guys, but it says in the article the programming is built into OS X Snow Leopard. Yes, I haven't moved my iMac in over four years. But why would I want to transmit any of that info to Apple or anyone else? One less thing intruding on my privacy is one more good thing, in my book.
And yes, I AM old! And tired!

Apple isn't collecting any data. It's stored on mobile devices and computers that they sync with. It isn't just iPhones and iPads either. Any GPS/cell enabled device stores the same information.
