I bought this app this morning before I left for work. Installed it on my iMac and left it running.

Came into work and tried it out. Works perfectly! Granted, it's a little lag, but considering I'm doing it wirelessly 10 miles away, I find it perfectly acceptable.

I was able to open an app, run it, download what I need, convert it via Visual Hub, add it to iTunes, do a Get Info and change it, and sync iTunes with my AppleTV! Pretty cool.

And just for the heck of it, I opened up FaceTime and started it up. Wonder who I connected to? why, myself!

Through more looking around I found a few apps that don't require the other side to be running on the Mac. They just use the built in VNC server only.

I love iTeleport on iPhone, and can’t wait to use it on iPad.

In my research (though not hands-on testing) I haven’t found anything to compete with it. You do NOT need anything running on the Mac. Nor do you need to sign in via Google (those things help make it all more automatic, especially if you don’t have a static IP address). iTeleport uses straight VNC, a.k.a. Screen Sharing. It can even work with Windows (VNC only, although there’s a non-Universal Windows Remote Desktop version).

I’ve tried Mocha (the lite version) and it can’t compete. For one thing, iTeleport gets the mouse control perfect—which may be the most important thing!

One of my favorite uses for iTeleport is as a sofa remote for my iMac. You can turn off the screen display to save battery, and it works like a giant touchpad, complete with right-click and scrolling and app-switching gestures, plus gestures that will skip a song and some other useful things. Three-finger gestures will show-hide the main keyboard and/or the man “extra” keys (Command, Page Up, etc.). Best of all: when the screen display is off, pinch-zooming is no longer needed... so instead it zooms the Mac’s OWN screen! I can pinch zoom my Mac and see things well even from my sofa.

A Mac-specific app called Screens (similar price to iTeleport) does look promising—probably less powerful, but easier to set up and use:

iTeleport has saved my bacon while traveling in the middle of nowhere: I needed to look at a file and call a client back ASAP, but I didn’t have my Air with me. It was back in the cabin. Closed and asleep. On no! So I just iTeleported to my home iMac, hundreds of miles away, and accessed the Time Capsule backup of the laptop. All over Edge with a weak signal... it was dog slow, but when you need a file, slow is a whole lot better than nothing! (It’s also nice sometimes to peek at Flash sites, since I’m a flash developer.)

Now, when I’m going away and I think I’ll need to access my home computer, I set it on a schedule (in Energy Sever Preferences) so it wakes up at a certain time each day. At the same time, my iPhone plays a certain alarm to remind me that this is my chance to get to my Mac.

In the iTeleport icon in the menu bar is it grayed out and says Connect or lit up and says Disconnect.
