In the light of a new day, from the looks of it, iTeleport and iTap use Apple's VNC/Screen Sharing server.

It seems you also have to have iTeleport running on the machine to do the IP resolving so it appears that you don't need to do the dyndns thing to resolve your IP, sorry for leading you in that direction.

I thought it was a regular VNC client being used on the iPad, but it's not. They seem to do the IP resolving by running the app on the computer.

Oh well, you learned a bit about your router, eh? You would have wanted to use the MAC address for the record.

So, what does that mean? Should I undo what I did?

Just launch the DynDns Updater and go to Tools/Uninstall.

In 30 days you'll receive an email asking you to confirm your dyndns account, just don't confirm it and it will drop off of their database. It doesn't hurt to have an account, you're just not going to use their services.

Yeah, I use dyndns to connect to my machines at home. Although I have my router update the ip when it changes. Do Airport base stations not have a configuration spot for services like dyndns?

It has a place to enter the info but it's a psyche, it doesn't work like a regular update client or $10 routers. You have to jump through these hoops.

So you need to register a new domain name from someone for a price and then purchase Custom DNS from dyndns for $30 a year.

I have no idea why you have to do all that. My guess is some kind of security thing where Apple is saving us from ourselves again. To take from our local sage NG4;

I'm trying out TeamViewer HD, it's free.

If I can't connect from work, I'll get the iTeleport.

Scratch that. Teamviewer has a window that has an ID/Password...how would I get that from work? duh...

I use TeamViewer a lot. It works pretty good. As far as cross platform a Mac can control a PC and a PC can control a Mac. It has a few glitches, mainly keyboard short cuts, but for free for non-commercial use it's as stable as Apple's $500 Remote Desktop, but can plow through any firewall. I can even use it to get to computers on a JP Morgan Chase network, and they have those locked down. Uber security. This is one of the banking facilities that have USB ports and CD burning hobbled on all Windows machines too, but I digress. I'm just impressed with how Team Viewer can get through even that.

Launch TV on the computer you want to control. It will give an ID. That will never change. Write it down. Through every launch the ID stays the same, it does its own dyndns kind of thing according to the hardware/network specs of the machine it's running on.

The password does change on every launch, but you can lock a 4 digit password in. On the Mac; Preferences/General/Password. If you did it right the Password window on the left of the TV window will say predefined.

Since the ID never changes, all you need to do is to have it launched on the machine you want to control, launch it on the machine you're in front of, put in the ID, then at the next prompt enter the predefined password.

I don't see an iPad app yet.

Edit - Okay, got to thinking, TeamViewer HD? What's that? I can't even keep up with this stuff. I see that TeamViewer HD is an iPad app. The above will still work with it.

I'll keep TeamviewerHD for when I want to connect to my dad's computer or home one if someone is home, since it's free. But I purchased iTeleport this morning and it works from home.

When I get to work, I'll try it again.
