Well, it's apparently all tied together.

Because Bush is the one leading the charge, he's the main target of people's ire...

[color:red]Hold on, it's time for a
Sorry, but you're wrong. I don't particularly like Mr. Bush, but I like his policies, and his approach to international relations in particular, even less. That was true from before he created this war fever, before his response to 9/11. To be sure, as DM implies, it's hard to separate the man from his policies. That's always true.

Great wits are sure to madness near allied.--John Dryden, "Absalom and Achitophel"

No one really paid him much attention before 9/11, though...

About the worst thing he was going to have to deal with was the economy..

How I wish that was the case.

[color:red]Hold on, it's time for a
I paid attention to his international policies--from snubbing South Korea to ditching Kyoto to making believe Canadanians didn't exist. You're right, though, most people didn't pay much attention to it--but that's always been true of Americans, I think: we usually don't give a good fart for anything that happens beyond the country's borders. Even the weather maps stop at the border--what a ridiculous thing, if you think about it!

Great wits are sure to madness near allied.--John Dryden, "Absalom and Achitophel"

If we're an egocentric society, I think we deserve to be a little bit...this is a damn great place to live!

To what degree, I honestly don't know.

[color:red]Hold on, it's time for a
No doubt about that, DM, no doubt.

Still, I think it's important to know how we use our greatness. It ain't always pretty.

Great wits are sure to madness near allied.--John Dryden, "Absalom and Achitophel"

One thing you don't hear as much about now that the war has taken center stage is the drilling for oil in the Alaskan wildlife refuge. I did hear that it was just barely defeated again a while ago... I imagine it will rear its *ugly* head again in the future.

There is certainly a good deal of conjecture regarding the goals in Iraq and the goals of Alaskan oil drilling... more oil for american oil companies.

My question for people here is... shouldn't Bush be satisfied now that he has (will have) Iraq? Since he got his war and future control of one of the largest supplies of crude oil in the world, can't he give up on destroying the refuge now for what would certainly be a drop in the bucket?

I've never been a proponent of it, but I can't even imagine what the Bush administration's logic would be now, given the situation this week?
