I can't speak for iPads, but for iPhones, the Otterbox is about as rigid and safe for the iPhone as you can get. I wish I had one when I got my iPhone because then I wouldn't have had to replace the glass when I drop it.
When I do get an iPad, I'll probably just use the Apple iPad Case. I have seen one in person and really liked it.
I am using the Apple case on my iPad and do not have any complaints so far. If I was taking mine to work I might look at one that has some type of way to fasten the case.

I love it. I asked my daughter to find me a case that was not bulky but had texture so It would not slip out of my hands and that a definite carrying handle. This has that.
I took off the strap sits less bulky and so it has less to flop around an get e into trouble.
I have found that I even find uses for the pockets as I take this thing around with me everywhere
