What I don't understand about this freeze is that military personnel would not be affected nor would members of Congress. Why the hell not?!?!?!? I can understand not freezing military pay. As it is now, those folks are coming home to poverty unless they live on base and/or are career military.
HOWEVER, if the Prez wants to make a dent, be on the side of the unemployed, working poor (which he has no clue about I'm ashamed to say), etc. he needs to freeze fed pay from the TOP all the way down to the bottom. It doesn't make sense to just freeze the pay of a "few." If anyone needs a freeze in pay it's Congress. Those folks get FREE benefits plus PERKS!!!!
Well I understand the skepticism... but they won't cut military pay because they're on the bottom of the pay scale anyway and many DO risk their lives to protect us. However civilian pay for the DOD WILL be cut.
**I'm not sure if the President has ANY control over Congressional pay. He does their staff but not them - I think they set their own. I think that was to prevent a nasty President from blackmailing them over salaries. Also I don't see any GOP sticking to their principles and giving up THEIR SOCIALIZED MEDICAL care !
I agree the COLA we lost is not major thing to sacrifice. There is some talk of a 10% across the board salary cut. I don't think they'll do that becasue whoever does is going to lose 10-20 milion votes (maybe more). NEITHER Party wants to risk that !
This is the problem, NO One wants to cut anything - The only way out of the crap hole the GOP (Bush /Cheney) dug is to raise taxes on some and cut spending in MANY places...
in many ways the rich deserve to pay the most- they supported these jerks and got their huge tax cuts for 10 years ! It's "pay back" time... and we're only talking 4% on the income above $250K.
The GOP wants to cut all non-military spending but don't touch the rich, big business, or the military. The Ds want to cut DOD, tax the rich a little more, but not touch SS, Medicare, or Medicaid..
NEITHER of these scenarios will work- we need ALL of the above.
One more thing.. I read in the Federal Times that the DOD blew $1 Billion, building this massive office complex in Alexandria VA. It's a monster and would house 6300 workers or about 25% of the Pentagon. The problem is they built it by I-985 and the roads around it can't handle the traffic. In addition, there's not enough parking; they built 1 deck that holds 1000 cars... but it's not close to any Metro station so people have to drive. The DOD paid for widening many streets around it, but it's STILL not enough. They can't open it until they solve the transportation/parking problems...
So what do >25000 people do at the Pentagon ? sheez. I'll admit CDC could cut 5-10% of the staff (esp contractors) - but we don't even come close to the size of the Pentagon.
And there are some CDC programs that could be cut- they're nice and valuable BUT compared to the financial solvency of the country they take back seat. They are luxuries we can't afford right now... shelf them for 2-5 years til we have our house back in order.
Senior Citizens on Social Security received no raise [COLA] in 2009, 2010, and will get none in 2011.
A 3% increase on $800 is $24. Then every time there is a COLA increase there is also an increase in the Medicare dividend. So, the $24 increase would be deducted by about $50 because usually there is a 6% increase in that charge.
Just doing our part to ensure millionaires get their large tax refunds.
They will waste money on these wars which the US in involved now regarding Afghanistan billions of dollars but COLA which people need they freeze for 3 years. No justification at all. Obama better get his act together before it is to late for him.It is a dam shame what is happening in the US.
From what I hear from Boehner and McConnell this AM, they're not doing ANYthing til they get their tax cuts for the rich.
If I were Reid- I'd tell the GOPers you get 2 (or 3 or less) more filibusters - you've used up your "wild cards" - after that the "nuclear option" is declaired in the Senate and we're moving on! Majority rules !
If the Dems and Obama keep letting the GOP dictate everything and lead them around by the jewels, they'll be out in 2012 ! This is Victory or come back laying on your shield !
